Organic OVER EVERYTHING!

What's the difference between conventional and organic tampons?

A woman uses over 12,000 tampons in a lifetime, yet regular (non natural/non certified organic) tampons may include nasties like like polyethylene, polypropylene, rayon, bleach and cotton that is grown using pesticides. Not things you'd want near some of the most delicate skin and organs in your body! The best way to be sure if your tampon is safe is to choose Certified Organic so you know that it's been officially assessed. Being made from 100% natural cotton, organic tampons can also decompose much faster than conventional ones, so they are much better for the environment too!

Is organic reliable at that time of the month?

Like SPF ratings, there's a legal Therapeutic Goods Association requirement for all tampons to meet the same absorbency levels, so there's no difference in the absorbency of organic tampons and the conventional brands. Organic tampons only use pure cotton, so they tend to be a bit bigger and denser to match the absorbency of synthetic materials. There's actually an experiment you can do yourself to see the difference! Pull apart a conventional tampon and an organic one - the organic one is harder to pull apart and the conventional one can be shredded easily! The reason why is that Organic tampons are made with dense, virgin, long fibre cotton, unlike the low quality, cheap-to-produce short fibre found in other brands. Another experiment you can conduct is to drop two different tampons into glasses of water - watch as the organic tampon stays intact and the synthetic one falls apart, spreading fibres and chemicals into the water. Do you really want these chemicals inside your body and potentially absorbed into your bloodstream?!

How can you avoid toxic tampons?

Toxic tampons can be avoided in the same way as your favourite eco t-shirt – choose Certified Organic cotton which hasn't been sprayed with pesticides! TOM 100% Organic Cotton tampons are Australian Certified Organic and have been tested by a panel of women, who said using organic gave greater peace of mind and made periods more tolerable and less irritating. According to TOM Organic, some women truly believed that having a red raw rash each month was the norm! TOM also tell us that organic tampons can also decrease the risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome, to date no cases have reported by women who have made the switch.
